Here’s the thing, Gully – a gun is both fun AND useful! If you’ve never been on a firing range trying out a new firearm, learning its quirks and how best to use it to fling a little bit of metal accurately into a piece of paper fifty feet away, you probably won’t know what we’re talking about.
Doesn’t hurt that gun manufacturing has become so efficient that you can get a super-precision piece of equipment that will last you half of forever for a fairly small amount of money.
For handguns the usual distance is more like 20 feet (though I’ve done some 50-100), can be 100+ for rifles.
