Current revision

Lux is an energy field on Aerith that most Rac Cona Daimh can use to interact with and manipulate physical objects and living things. It has a huge variety of effects.

Lux and Magic

  1. There is no such thing as wizards.
  2. There is no such thing as spells, enchantments, or magical artifacts.
  3. There is no such thing as magic.

"But you wouldn't know it to hear us talk about it." --A racconan professor

Luxcraft is sometimes called magic. There are three reasons for this: the idea barrier, the fakir movement, and the plastic nature of language.

The humans call lux sight 'fairy sight'

From the journals of Ennias Lonscript:

to quote: "It's not Occultic, blast it! It's just manipulating energies. No nature gods, no demons or deities or deals with Sheol. It's about as 'occultic' as using charcoal on a campfire, or using willow bark tea for a headache. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean the ruddy supernatural is involved-- you great hairless git."

Occurrence and Distribution

It occurs in nature everywhere to some extent but it is more prevalent in Antillia, probably because of the Rac Cona Daimh's luxfont which produces lux from water power. In the Outlands, lux wells were used to concentrate natural lux for a homestead's use.

Whereas electricity is (arguably) more potent with easier conversion, lux is obviously easier and apparently safer to transmit.

Kenning

Kenning is the use of lux to sort of look inside things, or to otherwise visualize the patterns of lux in the world around the lux user.

Luxcraft

Luxcraft is the use of lux to modify objects or living things in some way.

Bonding

Parameters related to bonding:

  • exclusivity - who can and can't use it
  • proactive/reactive
  • passive/hostile - doesn't work/attacks unbonded people
  • locatable or analytical features - where it is or its condition, or it can be used to tell that about its user
  • side effects - separation sickness, backlash from damage to the object, amputation trauma, real injury
  • transferrant parameters - how it can be transferred to another user

Disciplines

Luxcrafts include:

Observed Effects

The following effects have been observed in canon:

  • accelerating the rate of oxidation (TOTQ:194)
  • telekenesis, floating objects (TOTQ:64, 334)
  • edge sharpening
  • storing values (times, etc)
  • electricity
  • flame
  • producing acoustic vibrations (announcing a time, various noises, sonic boom)
  • extreme temperature effects
  • animal will influence - however, barn rats are tenacious and become resistant to repellant spells over time

Speculated Effects

The following effects have been advocated as likely or probable:

The Luxfont

Main article: Luxfont

The luxfont is a device that amplifies the usable lux within Sanctuary City and its surroundings.

Official Speculation

Comment by RH Junior: (Source)

Electricity is objectively more obvious and concrete a natural phenomenon (lightning, static electricity, etc) while Lux is somewhat exotic in property (having possible extradimensional or exotic quantum properties) and hard to detect (a possible explanation for the mercurial nature of many "paranormal" phenomena. Using the standard tools---geiger counters, spectrometers, EM detectors, etc--- to try and observe lux phenomena would be, to quote Scott Adams, like using a metal detector to check your sock drawer for unicorns... and how difficult is it to reliably replicate a natural phenomena that is, by nature, erratic?)
However, electricity is a lot more specific about what materials it will work with... You need metal wires, conductors, semi conductors.... all specific elements. While lux will apparently work through or with many materials--- stone, metal, crystal, even wood and bone--- with varying effects and efficiency.

Henges

Henges are used for containing the effects of experimental artifacts.

Night Terrors

As a racconan kit grows, and their burgeoning power outgrows their body's ability to hold the lux in, the kit often undergoes a period of severe night terrors-- illusions cast while in the throes of a nightmare. Though the illusions are harmless, it can be a traumatic time for the kit. With their worst fears coming to life every night, it can reach a point where they can no longer tell what is real and what is dream.
